THE CATHEDRAL OF SAN DONATO

The Cathedral of the Saints Peter and Donatus, the Dome of Arezzo, is the main place of worship in town. Construction began in 1278 by the Bishop Guglielmo degli Ubertini, and was finished in 1511 although was interrupted several times.

The external facade was fixed, as we see it today, between 1900 and 1914. The interior with three naves is characterised by a polygonal apse. The seven stained glasses of Marcillat cycle are real masterpieces and the artist also designed the impressive staircase which leads to the basilica.

Several works by great artists tied to Arezzo are preserved inside the Dome. Among these: The Maria Magdalen fresco by Piero della Francesca and the wooden choir of the main altar designed by Giorgio Vasari. The illustrious artist is also credited with the design of the organ’s pedestal along the left nave. Andrea della Robbia’s altar pieces are placed inside “The Madonna del Conforto” chapel.

The Gothic style bell tower, whose unique profile is visible from each access point to the city, has an hexagonal plant divided in four tiers overlapped by cornices.
